5 packages from Art Clay Silver Regular Silver Clay 10 grams are ready to use directly from the packaging and consists of 99% pure silver, binder, and water. With 10 grams, this packaging provides an excellent amount of silver clay for making jewelry the size of a 1- or 2-euro coin* and other decorative silver pieces (*depending on ring size, thickness, and width).
After firing, the clay has a purity of 99.9% silver and can be certified as 925 silver in the Netherlands.
The clay dries naturally, so keep this in mind while working. Ensure any leftover clay remains moist to prevent it from drying out during use.
Shaping Phase
The clay is easy to work with using shaping tools and materials suitable for different types of clay. Other tools may also be useful, but ensure they are rust-free to avoid staining the silver. The silver clay can be used directly from the packaging. If the clay sticks to your hands, you can use a little olive oil on your hands, work mat, and tools. If the clay feels dry, add a small amount of distilled water with a damp finger and knead it into the clay, using plastic wrap if needed. Be sure not to let any leftover clay dry out during work.
Drying Phase
The clay has a light grey color. Drying time varies depending on the method:
- Air-dried: 24 hours for 10g clay at 1mm thick.
- With a hairdryer: About 20 minutes.
- In a household oven: 10 minutes at 100°C.
Check the dryness with a mirror: place the warm piece on a mirror. If condensation appears, the clay is not yet dry.
After drying, the clay has the hardness of plaster. You can attach or repair parts by making paste from leftover clay. The dry clay can be engraved and worked with a sharp object. Keep in mind that there is a shrinkage of about 9% to 10%, especially with rings, which will shrink approximately 4 to 5 Japanese sizes (other sizes can be found in the ring size chart). Sanding and filing are easier in the dry phase, as the silver will be harder after firing.
Firing Phase
The Art Clay Silver Regular clay can be fired uncovered in a special kiln. Place the clay directly on a fiberboard or grid in a preheated oven. For extra support, you can use fiber cloth, fiber paper, or granules to support fragile jewelry. Small zirconia stones (up to 6mm) can be placed directly in the hot oven. If unsure, it is recommended to insert the clay cold and then slowly allow it to cool to room temperature. Art Clay Silver Regular can also be fired on a special grid on a gas stove or with a microtorch. View our instructional videos here. For use with glass, ceramics, pottery, or porcelain, you must use a cold oven and a customized firing curve. Gold foil or gold paste can also be used to apply 22k gold accents.
Finishing Phase
After firing, the clay will have a white color due to the crystalline structure of fine silver. Use a polishing brush to create a nice matte silver surface. For further finishing, you can use polishing sponges and an agate pen or polishing needle. For convenience, sanding discs with a Dremel are very suitable. Polishing paste can be used to achieve a high-gloss finish. Art Clay Silver Regular has a beautiful, bright silver color.
