Gold leaf is paper-thin and resembles real gold. It is so thin that you cannot hold it with your hands. However, there is a technique to apply gold leaf to your jewelry.
The gold leaf can be applied to deeper parts of your jewelry to protect it from wear, or with a layer of UV resin as extra protection. It cannot be applied as durably as with gold paste or the Keum Boo technique.
NOTE: Not suitable for Keum Boo.
Gold leaf sticks immediately to surfaces due to static electricity. It also blows away quickly, so make sure there are no fans on or a hairdryer aimed at your workspace.
Instructions for applying gold leaf:
Apply a thin layer of sticky ink from Pergamano and allow it to dry. Do not use too much ink, as this will remain visible under the gold.
-
Use a real-hair brush to apply the gold leaf. By gently rubbing against the edge of the gold leaf, you can pick up a piece and apply it to the sticky ink.
-
Cover the entire surface in this way.
-
Gently press the gold down with the hairs of the brush to ensure good adhesion. Repeat this process to burnish the gold leaf (rub for better adhesion and shine).
-
The gold leaf cannot be polished; the layer is too thin for that.
-
Apply a thin or thick layer of UV resin for proper protection of the gold leaf.
For a different effect, gold leaf can also be mixed into resin. Use a toothpick to pick up and mix the gold leaf. This will create small flakes of gold that "float" in place within the resin.
Gold leaf can also be applied to wood and polymer clay. For more detailed information, look up additional resources online.
