Uses of Baking Soda

Baking Soda is an essential tool when working with liver of sulfur. It helps to neutralize the liver of sulfur, preventing your work from becoming darker than desired. In addition, it is better for the skin to neutralize the liver of sulfur.

Neutralizing Liver of Sulphur

Prepare the Mixture: Before you begin blackening, prepare a mixture of baking soda and water. This will allow you to stop the color change once the desired shade has been achieved. In a bowl or tea glass, mix approximately 1 tablespoon of baking soda to 200ml of warm water (80 °C).
Immersion: Use a container large enough to immerse your copper or silver item. Once you have immersed the item in the liver of sulphur and the desired color has been achieved, place the item in the prepared baking soda mixture.
Rinse: Leave the item in the mixture for a few minutes. Remove it and then wash it with warm water and soap to remove any residue.

Remove Oxides from Silver

To remove oxides from silver, follow these steps:

Preparation: Place a sheet of aluminum foil in a glass container and add enough hot water (80 °C) to completely submerge the silver.
Add Ingredients: Add 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 1 tablespoon of salt to the water.
Soak: Place the silverware on the foil in the water, making sure each piece is touching the aluminum. Let it soak for 2-5 minutes. During this time, a sulfuric odor may develop due to the chemical reaction.
Rinse and Polish: Remove the silver, rinse it with warm water, and polish it with a soft cloth. Repeat these steps as necessary for stubborn oxides.

Neutralization After Using Liver of Sulfur

You can also add baking soda to the liver of sulfur solution after you are done pickling. The baking soda will neutralize the liver of sulfur and Blitz pickling, making it safe to rinse down the drain.
